Gauge tables found on GATX, UTLX web sites indicate a specific rail cars gauge table. Example UTLX 900653 relates that the tank car is 25000gals and is 118". Is this measurement the diameter of the outer metal shell. This measurement is equivalent to 10 feet 6 inches in diameter. This would seem wrong given the gauge table corresponds actual fractions of inches with real liquid capacities. Some tanks are insulated, others lined. If this car (sited above) is lined would the diameter be 118"? Is there a way of using the gauge table as a reference for actual true tank diameters given the different arrangements? Can anyone shed some light on how this works? Also if you wanted to make a specific tank car how can you get good prototypical information apart from magazines?
